Fix GTA 4 DD3D30 (D3D) Error in Windows 7

GTA IV is a action-adventure video game with high quality graphics, sound effects, various stages and characters. It is the sixth 3D game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Grand Theft Auto IV has already received overwhelmingly positive reviews, becoming one of the highest-rated games of all time on Games review websites.

Officially the game is compatible with Windows 7 but some of the users get the following error when pressing the “Play” button
DD3D30
D3D Error – Please re-boot your system
This problem continues even after changing the compatibility mode to Windows Vista or Windows XP for the game or rebooting the system.

Here is a workaround to fix this by reducing the color quaility from highest quality of True Color (32 bit) to lower quality of High Color (16 bit). Right click on Desktop >> select Screen Resolution >> Advanced settings >> Monitor tab. and change the display resolution. Else you can also reduce the desktop display resolution to 800×600 pixels as GTA 4 runs properly at this resolution. Once you are in the game, change back to original resolution.

Few of Windows 7 users, like me, can get the error while installing Google Chrome, Google Earth or any other Google product:
Google update installation failed with error 0x8004071c

1. Go to Start->Run and type in the following and then press OK: regedit
2. Find the following reg key:

For Windows 7/Vista: The value of 'ImageState' in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\State
For XP: The value of 'AuditInProgress' in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Setup

3. Right click the reg key and select Modify
4. Delete the value then press OK.

Install Windows 7 From a USB Drive

Windows 7 can run on machines with lower specs than required for Windows Vista. Infact, many users are actually finding it runs better than Windows XP on lower spec machines. Windows 7 is also ideal to run on newer netbooks, but unfortunately many of these do not include a DVD drive so here is a trick to install windows 7 on a machine without a DVD drive by using a USB Drive.

How To Install Windows 7 From A USB Drive

windows 7 usb1. Plug a 4GB USB Drive into your computer.
2. Press Win Key + R to open Run. Type cmd and click OK. Once cmd is open type diskpart and a new window will open
3. In the new diskpart window type:

* ‘list disk’ : This lists all the disk drives attached to your machine
* Look for your USB drive and note the number and then type: ’select disk #’, where ‘#’ is your USB disk number
* then type ‘clean’
* then type ‘create partition primary’
* then ’select partition 1′
* then ‘active’
* then ‘format fs=fat32 quick’

Once you’ve finished these steps you need to copy your Windows 7 files to the USB. To do this mount your Windows 7 ISO as a virtual DVD:

1. Install MagicDisk (free)
2. Once installed, right-click on MagicDisk in your system tray click on ‘Virtual CD/DVD-Rom’, select your DVD drive
3. then ‘Mount’ and in the dialog window that opens up, select your Windows 7 ISO

While I was searching for buying a LCD TV this Diwali,I came across a great website ConsumerMate.com. The website is an Initiative by 9.9 Media and provides comparison for Laptops, LCD and Plasma TVs. They have recently launched a Mobile section.

Download Harry Potter And Half-Blood Prince Movie

Harry Potter and Half Blood Prince

Don't be shocked seeing the title of this post, TechacK is not offering this movie for download. In fact, this post is to warn users about such titles being used by malware authors to cash-on the upcoming release of Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.

Cyber criminals are doing mass-level Search Engine Optimizations targeting Harry Potter fans. They hide their malicious codes inside fake downloads which offer full length pre release version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie. Other websites lure users to click on a link which leads them to another website asking to install their streaming codec to watch the leaked version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince online for free. But this streaming codes is actually a malware and opens your computer for trojans and viruses attack.

Harry Potter and Half Blood Prince

Just wait for the release of the movie and go and watch in at a theater near you, instead of getting infected by viruses and trojans.

Samsung NC20 netbook review

Samsung had announced the launch of Samsung NC20 netbook, the successor of the NC10, in early 2009 and finally it has hit Indian markets. The Samsung NC20 is larger than NC10 yet the design is quiet similar (view the image and judge yourself).

The netbook has 12.1 inch LCD providing 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. The screen is brighter and crisper than most netbooks in the market and it will surely make your Web browsing experience and casual gaming an absolute joy. Other feautres of the NC10 is the use of the more powerful 1.6GHz VIA Nano U225 processor and VIA Chrome 9 HC3 Graphics. It means that Samsung NC20 netbook can play Full HD (1080p) video without any problems. Another striking feauture is the high capacity battery. The company claims that once fully charged, Samsung NC20 can last for upto 10 hours, making it an ideal netbook for my next long flight. This has been possible due to the use of power efficient Nano processor.

Samsung NC20

However, I was a bit puzzled seeing the Windows button on the right as well as the size of the arrow keys and the function keys being slightly smaller than the rest.

Thanks to its full-size keyboard with optimal key spacing, the Samsung NC20 is a highly portable device that blurs the line between netbooks and laptops. In short, all these features at an attractive price makes Samsung NC20 one of the best all-round netbooks.

If you own this product or have seen it at a dealer's shop, do let us know your thoughts on Samsung NC20 and your experiences with it by commenting below.

Windows Live Planet by Microsoft

After Bing, Microsoft has launched Windows Live Planet which is a new social networking site designed primarily to take on Orkut and Facebook. Windows Live Planet is similar to most of the other social networks, but is totally different in design and the User Interface as evident from the screenshot.

Windows Live Planet

Most of the features on Windows Live Planet are fast due to the use of AJAX. You can invite your friends from other social networks or directly email the invite. You can sign in to Windows Live Planet using your Hotmail / Windows Live. Windows live messenger is integrated with Live Planet, similar to Google Talk being linked with Orkut, and you will automatically get signed in to your messenger as soon as you login on this site.

The Scribble Pad is similar to Scrapbook feature in Orkut but each scribble can be up to 150 characters in length. It means they are even incorporating Twitter's features. So,

Google Chrome OS What to expect

Google has already announced that it is going to build Google Chrome OS. This Operating System is being designed especially for small netbooks and notebooks. I don't think that one should expect it to be a Windows killer straight away. Possibly, not in the next 5 years. Here are some features you can expect in Google Chrome OS:

    Google Chrome OS
  1. Pre-Bundled with Google Desktop Search and other Google products.
  2. Serving contextual ads in every folder. :D
  3. Presence of the “I am feeling lucky”button. (How can you forget it!)
  4. All the Microsoft product will be marked as suspicious. :P
  5. Google Chrome OS will be in Beta stage till 2020 (or maybe even more) =))
  6.

What features do you think it will have besides those mentioned above? Let us know via comments.

    Google Chrome OS

It has been just nine months since Google launched its web browser Google Chrome and here is another exciting announcement from Google. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.

They even comment on Microsoft as:

“However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web.”
Google Chrome OS is built to run on both x86 architecture chips and ARM chips, like the ones increasingly found in netbooks. It is also working with multiple OEMs to get the new OS up and running next year. Chrome OS will definately be lightweight and fast just like the browser itself and probably far better than Windows Vista, atleast!

Chrome OS will be all about the web apps and no doubt HTML 5 is going to be a huge part of all of this. A lot of people are still wary about running web apps for when their computer isn’t connected to the web. But HTML 5 has the potential to change that, as you’ll be able to work in the browser even when not connected, and upload when you are again.

Personally, I don't think Google Chrome OS will be a threat to Microsoft at the moment as Microsoft is already a big player in the market. But who knows what will happen when it is launched. Wake up Microsoft!

    Beware of Michael Jackson Virus

After the death of the biggest pop artist Michael Jackson, the search for the term 'Michael Jackson' or 'Michael Jackson songs' has greatly increased on the web. The spammers are taking advantage of this and spreading malware and viruses over internet to capitalize on this trend.

    michael jackson

Security researcher at Sophos have warned people against Jackson spam and viruses. This virus is spreading via email containing the subject line “Remembering Michael Jackson”. The email contains zip file claiming to have secret songs and photos of Michael Jackson. People download the file and their PCs get infected. The e-mail claims to come from sarah@michaeljackson.com.

This malware also spreads via USB devices. There is another email spreading viruses which claims to have the exclusive YouTube video of the last work of Michael Jackson.

How To Open Files With Unknown File Extensions

Many a times you might have received files with unknown file extensions or downloaded the files with extension for which you don’t have a corresponding software.

A filename extension is a suffix to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the file format of its contents. While many file extensions like .txt, .doc, .xls, .png etc. are quite common on windows, many may not be aware of files with extensions such as .gan, .abt, .mpp and others.

When you double click such files, it bring up the unknown file dialog box, where you can choose to pick a program from a list, by choosing the radio button “Select the program from a list” and clicking “OK”. But if none of the appropriate programs to open the file are listed, use OpenWith.org which is extremely useful.

OpenWith.org is a database of free programs to open such unknown file extensions. It provides a desktop client that lets you search for free software that you can download, to open files of unknown file types.

    Download OpenWith.org desktop tool

After installing this tool, whenever you right-click on a file you’ll  find, “OpenWith.org – How do I Open This?”. Click that and the tool searches for a suitable free program to open it. An active internet connection is required. If the program you want to use isn’t already installed, click on the Download link and voila! The program will be downloaded.

Remove Software Not Listed Under Add/ Remove Program

It may happen many a times that you install a program and it doesn't show up under Add/ Remove Program in Windows XP. This problem can occur if the program you installed creates a registry key name that is longer than 60 characters in length. Add/Remove Programs only lists program names it locates up to the point it encounters this situation. Follow the steps given to solve the problem:

    1. Go to C:\Windows\Inf folder. In the right pane, scroll down to sysoc.inf. Open it with notepad. It will look like…
    [Components]
    NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
    Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,HIDE,7

    2. The word "HIDE" in an entry hides that application from your Add/Remove Programs dialog box. To add Pinball to the Add/Remove menu, delete the word HIDE from its entry. Leave the commas that surround it.

    3. Save the file. Check for the new entries in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box after you restart your computer.

Alternate Method (when the programs are not in sysoc.inf file)

    1. Right click the Program's shortcut/ Properties to gain the target path where the application folder is located. Delete the folder.

    2. Go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup and make sure it is not listed or checked there. If so, uncheck it.

    3. Remove the program listing from registry by going here: Start/Run/Regedit

For items that were in the Start menu, Programs, Startup folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder. You'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

For items loaded from the Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg. Again, you'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

Again while in Regedit, navigate to this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications. If the program is listed, right click, delete.

    4. Go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. If the program file type is listed, either use Change or Delete.

    Twitter vocabulary for newbies

Twitter has been popular for a long time but if you have joined in recently, you might be wondering what is RT, what are hashtags etc. as you see that people use them. Actually, there is a need to learn a whole new set of vocabulary in order to fully take advantage of the service. Here are a few terms which will guide the new tweeters.

    Tweeter

Someone who posts a message on Twitter.

    FTW - For the win
Known more for a celebratory remark left at the end of the tweet, the acronym “FTW” is basically saying that something rocks, a person has come through in a clutch, or someone or something has saved the moment/day.

    RT - Retweet

A retweet is basically tweeting someone’s previous tweet with @ symbol and his/her username. RTs are done because you find it interesting that you would like to share with your friends and followers. Attribution of the tweet to the original tweeter is needed.

    #Hashtag

Hashtags are phrases or keywords that can be used to monitor who is saying what about a particular topic. Standards for hashtags are one word (#Conference) or multiple words strewn together without any spaces (#EventConferenceTheme).

    DM - Direct Message

Direct messaging is the way on Twitter for you to send private messages. The only way to send DMs is if the recipient is following you & for them to respond with a DM, you would need to be following them.

    Fail

Fail is the slang term that can be used to mean that something or someone has failed to meet expectations. For example, going to see a movie or to an event with lot of expectations only to be disappointed? You might tweet your disappointment followed by the word “Fail”.

    Twitter handle

This is the name that designates someone on Twitter. When someone asks what your Twitter handle is, this means they are asking for your username. For example, my twitter hand is techack.

    URL Shortener

Since Twitter only allows 140 characters, every single character counts. URL Shortener allow you to post weblinks more efficiently and some will even offer tracking capability that you can see how many twitter followers click on the link. TinyURL, Bit.ly and is.gd are some famous URL Shorteners.

If you have few other Twitter terms in your mind, do let me know via comments.

    Wikipedia As A Printed Book

The English edition of Wikipedia Encyclopedia contains around 3 million articles as of now and if someone were to print the entire Wikipedia encyclopedia into a book, the size of that book would roughly be equivalent to 952 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Rob Matthews, a student in UK has actually converted 0.01% of the Wikipedia encyclopedia into a printed book. See some pictures below:

This Wikipedia book has some 5,000 pages and it’s a compilation of 400+ featured articles all picked from Wikipedia. The height of this book is about 1ft 7in.

Kabir Chauhan has made a nice post mentioning 13 alternative Search Engines that can find information more efficiently than Google. Google  has become the standard search engine of virtually every web user today. In fact “to Google” is pretty much synonymous with “to search”. But that certainly doesn’t mean that other search engines can’t do a decent, if not better, job and this list has been compiled for just this reason.

The three genres or categories are:
    • Music & Video
    • Files & Others
