Correct Google update installation failed with error 0x8004071c

Few of Windows 7 users, like me, can get the error while installing Google Chrome, Google Earth or any other Google product:
Google update installation failed with error 0x8004071c
The error means that your computer is currently in Windows Audit Mode and is conflicting with the installation. To solve the problem of Google update installation failed you need to modify your registry:

1. Go to Start->Run and type in the following and then press OK: regedit
2. Find the following reg key:

For Windows 7/Vista: The value of 'ImageState' in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\State
For XP: The value of 'AuditInProgress' in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Setup

3. Right click the reg key and select Modify
4. Delete the value then press OK.

Now you can install your Google product without any error messeges.

  12. This step alone did not work for me. I also had to unistall ALL google products then remove ALL traces of google from the registry. Then I was able to install google app sync.
